East Hampshire Liberal Democrat District Councillors with PPC Dominic Martin

Fund Our Roads

We are calling on the Government to fix local government funding, so that Hampshire’s roads are properly maintained and made safe.

The backlog is huge and growing. Hampshire's highways maintenance backlog is more than £550 million, and it has grown over the past two years because of insufficient national funding. A more recent report puts it approaching £600 million, with the council needing an extra £20 million to £30 million a year. Short-term fixes cost more and planned resurfacing is more cost-effective and helps prevent the same potholes forming repeatedly.

We’re calling on the Government to:

Deliver sustained core funding increases for councils, so that they keep pace with inflation and a growing, ageing population.

Replace short-term emergency bailouts and piecemeal grants with multi-year financial settlements, so that Hampshire can plan long-term maintenance and resurfacing.

Properly ring-fence funding for road safety using residents’ road taxes , including for safer crossings where communities need them, 20mph limits outside schools and in village centres, and funding action at known danger spots.
