Water companies are failing and our environment is paying the price

28 Oct 2024

Southern Water and Thames Water, which both serve East Hampshire, were responsible for 8,362 hours of sewage overflows in 2023 in the East Hampshire constituency, analysis by website Top of the Poops revealed.

27 Serious Incidents

“Simply not good enough” said the Chair of the Environment Agency. Thames Water and Southern Water were the worst and second worst companies for serious pollution incidents and have made little to no improvement from the previous year.

Chalk Stream Damage

2000 fish died in a protected stream after up to 20 hours of sewage dumping. Southern Water were fined and a court found them to be negligent at Shawford Lake Stream.

Record £104 Million Fine

Water companies have been fined a record £168 million, including £104 million for Thames Water and £31 million for Southern Water. Earlier this year, regulators also issued a further £90 million fine to Southern Water after an investigation found they had failed to invest in infrastructure properly.

It's time for a sewage tax on £2.2 billion water company annual profits, a ban on executive bonuses, and to start dealing with this issue properly.
